Rock and Roll was made up of elements from various styles including: Blues Country Gospel Rockabilly It was essentially a blues style with a country beat.
Pioneers of Rock-n-Roll Rhythm and Blues (R & B) artists: • Ruth Brown • Louis Jordan • Big Joe Turner • Ray Charles This “race music” (as it was referred to then) provided the building blocks for rock. It was considered underground music. White society did not want their youth listening to this style of music. Although popular, DJ’s (Disc Jockey’s) would only play this music on white owned/operated radio stations at certain times to avoid backlash. Youth defied their parents by buying and listening to this music and often mixed with black youth at concerts.
Famous Promoters/DJ’s • Alan Freed – coined the term “ Rock and Roll” Fell out grace due to PAYOLA – where record companies paid/bribed DJs to play their records • Dick Clark – American Bandstand: a popular dance show that featured the popular artists of the time. Started in Philadelphia, PA.
