Polygons. A polygon is a closed figure made of line segments, or sides. Each line segment meets at its endpoint with the next line segment. Basically, if the figure you see has straight sides that are all connected than it is a polygon. A circle is NOT a polygon!.

  1. Polygons • A polygon is a closed figure made of line segments, or sides. Each line segment meets at its endpoint with the next line segment. • Basically, if the figure you see has straight sides that are all connected than it is a polygon. • A circle is NOT a polygon!

  2. 2-Dimensional ShapesIt’s all in the name You can tell how many sides a polygon has by looking at the beginning part of the name of the shape: For example, Triangle: The beginning part of this word is TRI meaning 3 so a triangle has 3 sides.

  3. Let’s Look At Some Others • Pentagon: PENT = 5 so a pentagon has 5 sides • Hexagon: HEX = 6 so a hexagon has 6 sides • Heptagon: HEPT = 7 so a heptagon has 7 sides • Octagon = OCT = 8 so an Octagon has 8 sides

  4. Quadrilaterals • Squares and Rectangles are from a polygon group called QUADRILATERALS (QUAD means 4 so all quadrilaterals have 4 sides) Parallelogram Rhombus Trapezoid Square Rectangle

  5. Squares and Rectangles Squares Rectangles A square has 4 sides that are EQUAL in length. Every square IS a rectangle All squares have four square corners A rectangle has 4 sides in which the 2 opposite sides are equal in length. A rectangle is a parallelogram with four square corners

  7. PROBABILITY Probability is the chance that something will happen - how likely it is that some event will happen.

  8. In Terms of Probability • Impossible : the outcome has no chance of happening • Unlikely: The outcome has a very small chance of happening but most likely will not happen • Maybe: The outcome has an equal chance of happening or not happening • Likely: The outcome has a good chance of happening but may not happen • Certain: The outcome will happen. • Equally likely/unlikely: When comparing two outcomes the chances that both will happen or not happen is the same

  9. Let’s Test Our ChancesWhat are the chances that the following events will occur? A dog will be born with 7 legs Choosing a red apple out of a bag that has 2 red apples and 2 green apples It will snow in December in Maine The Penguins will go to the playoffs The sun will set tonight Rolling a 7 using one dice Unlikely Equally Likely Likely Maybe Certain Impossible

Probability with Spinners • When finding the probability using a spinner, we use fractions to discuss the possibility of outcomes. • The spinner below is split into 4 equal parts so the is our denominator • Our numerator is the chances of the outcome to happen. For example, the probability of the spinner landing on a 3 is ¼. There is one section that has a 3 so 1 section out of 4 is our probability.

  11. Let’s try some • Using the spinner what is the probability of landing on a 1,2, or 3? • What is the probability of landing on a a red? 3/4 2/4 OR 1/2
