  1. Type II Projectiles

  2. Type II Projectile Motion • Projectile motion in which launch angle is above the horizon and the projectile lands at the same altitude as it was launched. • Example: A golf ball driven from the tee box without the use of a tee lands on the green; the green has the same elevation as the tee box.

  3. Type II Projectile Motion • How do Type II problems differ from Type I problems?

  4. Solving Type II • Draw a VELOCITY vector triangle to find the components of the launch velocity • Set up x and y lists • Solve

  5. Type II Projectile Motion – Sample Problem A golf ball is driven from level ground with an initial velocity of 40 m/s at an angle of 30° above the horizon. Find: • Max height of ball’s path b) hangtime c) range d) impact velocity

  6. Type II Projectile Motion For a given initial speed, what angle gives maximum range?

  7. Type II Projectile Motion For a given initial speed, what angle gives maximum range?

  8. Commit to Memory You’re expected to know the following characteristics of Type II Projectile problems for tests, quizzes, the final, etc. • Δtup = Δtdown

  9. Commit to Memory You’re expected to know the following characteristics of Type II Projectile problems for tests, quizzes, the final, etc. • Δtup = Δtdown • vy = 0 at top of trajectory (zenith); note that v ≠0!

  10. Commit to Memory You’re expected to know the following characteristics of Type II Projectile problems for tests, quizzes, the final, etc. • Δtup = Δtdown • vy = 0 at top of trajectory (zenith); note that v ≠0! • The magnitude of vimpact = the magnitude of vinitial angles are opposite sign

  11. Commit to Memory You’re expected to know the following characteristics of Type II Projectile problems for tests, quizzes, the final, etc. • Δtup = Δtdown • vy = 0 at top of trajectory (zenith); note that v ≠0! • The magnitude of vimpact = the magnitude of vinitial; angles are opposite sign (below vs. above horizontal) • Maximum range is achieved with a 45° angle.
