  2. “When you durst do it, Then you were a man” (I.vi.49) According to Macbeth what does it take to be a real man? Cite at least 3 separate passages and/or characters to support your response.

  3. Tone: author’s attitude vs. character setting and situation Think about the fate of many of the ‘manly’ characters in the play and the ultimate fate of Macbeth… What does Shakespeare believe about true manhood?

  4. Cultural applicability In American society, what does it mean to “be a man”? “Grow a pair”: call for “manly” courage, dangerous or even stupid action.

  5. “Since the 1950s, the image of the American woman has gone through numerous makeovers. But masculine expectations remain the same—even as there are fewer opportunities to fulfill them.” Does the masculine image—particularly in the Western World—need to be liberated?
