Countries/5 major Cities and Statistics • North and Central America ha a total of 23 countries. • 5 major cities: Chicago, Toronto, New York, Indianapolis, and Dallas • The area is 24,709,000 km • The population is 528,720,588 • North America covers 4.8% of the planets surface and about 16.5% of its land area.

  3. Climates • North America has a tropical humid climate. It has no real winter; even the coldest month averages about 18 degrees Celsius, with summers of 27 to 28. • North America, extending to within 10° of latitude of both the equator and the North Pole, embraces every climatic zone, from tropical rain forest and savanna on the lowlands of Central America to areas of permanent ice cap in central Greenland. Subarctic and tundra climates prevail in N Canada and N Alaska, and desert and semiarid conditions are found in interior regions cut off by high mountains from rain-bearing westerly winds. However, a high proportion of the continent has temperate climates.

  4. Landforms • Appalachian and Rocky Mountain, the Columbia and Colorado plateau, the Grand Canyon, the Florida swamps, Mt McKinley is the highest point, death valley is the lowest point.

  5. Water • 5 major rivers: Mackenzie, Columbia, Missouri, Mississippi, Ohio • 2 major lakes: Superior an Michigan • Bays: Hudson Bay and Buffin Bay • Oceans: Pacific Ocean, Arctic Ocean, Atlantic Ocean

  6. Agriculture Twenty-Two million American workers produce, process, sell and trade the nations food and fiber. Only 4.6 million of those people live on the farms. That is slightly less than 2% of the total U.S. population.

  7. Natural resources • Coal, copper, lead, molybdenum, phosphates, rare earth elements, uranium, bauxite, gold, iron, mercury, nickel, potash, silver, tungsten, zinc, petroleum, natural gas, and finally timber!

Belize Barrier Reef Reserve System Type: NaturalAdded: 1996 The Belize Barrier Reef is the second-longest in the world, after the Great Barrier Reef in Australia, and offers some of the world's very best diving and snorkeling. Many of the Belize cayes border the Belize Barrier Reef, or are part of it.

  9. Antigua Guatemala  Type: CulturalAdded: 1979 Antigua Guatemala is a colonial city, founded in 1543 by the Spanish conquistadors (back then, the city was named Santiago de los Caballeros). Despite a number of earthquakes, many of the city's colonial churches and other relics are still standing, just one of the reasons Antigua Guatemala is one of Central America's most popular destinations
