Types of Assistive Technology A PowerPoint presentation by Frankie Spradlin EDU 309 03/02/2014
Introduction This PowerPoint presentation will define, then focus on the different types of assistive technology, using both written text and visual aids.
~ Assistive Technology ~ Assistive Technology is an umbrella term that includes assistive, adaptive, and rehabilitative devices for individuals with disabilities.
Examples of Assistive Technology ~ Joysticks ~ Joysticks are manipulated by hand/wrist and can be used to control the cursor on a computer screen
Continued. . . . . ~ Alternative Keyboards~ Alternative keyboards can have features ranging from smaller or larger keys, different character placement, and an alternative keyboard can be designed to be used with one hand.
Continued. . . . . ~ Touch screens ~ Touch screens allow for direct interaction with a computer screen as the user literally touches the screen with his/her hands to make selections, etc.
Continued. . . . . ~ Screen Enlargers/Magnifiers ~ Screen Enlargers ands magnifiers work like a magnifying glass by enlarging a portion of the screen for the viewer, which can increase readability/legibility.
Continued. . . . . ~ Speech/Voice Recognition Programs ~ A speech/voice recognizing program recognizes spoken commands via a microphone, rather than the user using a mouse or keyboard.
Conclusion In conclusion, while this presentation only focuses on five different types of assistive technology, there are essentially countless other examples of assistive technology that are helping millions of individuals learn every day – learning that would simply not be possible without assistive technology.
