Chemical Synapse • Narrow cleft between presynaptic neuron and a postsynaptic cell. Molecules of neurotransmitter diffuse across it.[3] • Or, the space between a neuron and a cell for signal molecules to pass through.
Neurotransmitter • Communicate a signal between neurons, from the presynaptic cell to the postsynaptic cell by docking to presynaptic cell and released by electric pulse [2] • Help transmit electrical signals as chemical signals
Chemical Synapse video • Sweet Vid.
Transport • Proteins in postsynaptic cell • Exocytosis from presynaptic cell to synapse • Presynaptic cell re-uptakes used neurotransmitters using protein pumps
Specific Neurotransmitters • Serotonin-GI tract, Central Nervous system • Changes behaviors based on resources • Gut reactions (food) • Dopamine-located in the mid-brain • Natural pain-killer • Social well-being • Reward motivation
Cocaine Addiction [1] • Symptoms: depression, anxiety, pain, craving • Cocaine’s influence: binds to dopamine transport proteins • Prevents reuptake of dopamine • Constant signals so dopamine production slows. Cocaine eventually wears off. • Also kills receptors on postsynaptic cell
