Program Description • Battle of the Books is a voluntary reading program • Available to 3rd – 5th grade students • 5 students battle on each team • Students read from a list of high quality literature • Students meet weekly with coach to discuss books • Battles occur one time per month • November – March • Students earn points for a correct answer of title and author of the book

Purpose for Implementation • Battle of the Books motivates students to read • Current Children’s Choice award program has 15% participation rate • Provides an opportunity for students to respond to their reading in a fun environment • Promotes student, teacher and librarian collaboration (Strategic Planning Committee goal) • Aligns with AASL and common core standards • Aligns with Kipling SIP goals

What the research says… • Research has shown highly engaged readers demonstrate higher achievement (Guthrie, 2000) • Students are motivated to read by: • Creating relationships • Building success • Assuring relevance • Fostering Awareness • Offering Choices • Arranging social settings All these components are part of Battle of the Books
