Assistive Technology in the Care Home Environment Tuesday 22nd May 2012 By Ernie Graham, Owner, Hailsham House
Assistive Technology in Care Homes • Why in the Care Home environment?..... • …..given: • Staff already available to assist/supervise/monitor • Residents’ disabilities impair their ability to use technology • but……… • Technology can assist with social needs just as much as physical/health needs • To deliver high quality care, everything outcome that matters needs to be measured!.....
Assistive Technology in Care Homes • Graham Care Group: • Care Home operator in Surrey, Kent, Sussex with 500 places • Investment in e-technology to improve care outcomes: • Electronic care plans/daily reports, accessible on-line • Nurse Call System data available remotely • Bespoke Social Networking system • ….and soon.…bar coded medication with web-based records
Assistive Technology in Care Homes • Electronic care plans/daily reports: • Off the shelf package • Whoever delivers the care writes it up! • All records date/time stamped, providing clear audit trail • Care Plan reviews part of management reporting system • Web-link allowing all records can be securely accessed by residents and their families • Residents and their families e-mailed every time a care plan is updated.
Assistive Technology in Care Homes • Night-time bedroom visit reports: • Night time is a high risk period – lower staffing levels with less supervision • Technical infrastructure (i.e. nurse call system) already exists in most homes • Data link cheap/easy to install • Staff press “present” button each time they visit a room • Data downloaded into a report every morning (using e-outsourcing!)

Assistive Technology in Care Homes • Social Networking System: • Bespoke system funded by SEHTA in 2011 and developed by George James Software • “Private” messaging system for residents’ friends and families • Uses both sms text and on-line messaging (via home’s website) • Encourages friends/families to share their day-to-day lives with residents • Residents fully supported by dedicated “Social Assistants”
22/05/12 From Bonnie to Caroline & John I’m about to spend some one-to-one time with your mum – please text me any news for her – she would like to know what you’re up to to-day!
16/04/12 From Caroline to Mum (cc John) Mum, I’m away from my clients to-day - I’ve had to go to a meeting in Eastbourne where I’m listening to a presentation on technology! It’s pretty boring so far!!
16/04/12 From John to Caroline (cc Mum) Caroline, I always knew I should have worked in Social Services, where all you need to do is attend meetings!! I’m stuck on the M25 on my way to yet another appointment! Mum, at least one of your children works for a living!
16/04/12 From Mum to Caroline (cc John) Caroline – Don’t knock technology – I couldn’t be in touch with my mum while I was at work!! P.S. Great to hear from you both – but don’t forget to visit me soon!
Assistive Technology in Care Homes • Why in the Care Home environment?..... • …..Technology can be used to: • Promote more personalised care planning and review • Improve consistency of care delivery • Improve staff supervision and reduce risk • Enhance residents’ wellbeing through improved communications with families/friends
