  1. Summer Reading Exam Common Mistakes

  2. When it comes to novels… • UNDERLINE OR QUOTATION MARKS? • Use the bookshelf trick: • If it can sit on a bookshelf, then it is going to need ________________. • If it needs “hooks” to help it stay on a bookshelf, then it is going to need _______________.

  3. Me, Myself, and I • FORBIDDEN WORD: I • Often used with: believe, think, feel • Other forbidden words: Me, myself, in my opinion • TAKE A LOOK AT THIS SENTENCE: • I believe that Billy Pilgrim has lost his mind because he sees Tralfamadorians. • I believe that Billy Pilgrim has lost his mind because he sees Tralfamadorians.

  4. Formal vs. Informal Tone • Whenever you’re in an educational setting, you should be writing in FORMAL tone! • STUFF: He’s seeing aliens and stuff. • CRAP: It was a crappy way to die. • CRAZY: It was crazy how he saw aliens! • Don’t overuse exclamation marks. • DEFINITELY avoid texting acronyms: lol, wth, ):

  5. Scoring • Each question was worth 10 points. • You received full credit if you answered the question thoroughly and thoughtfully. • The more examples/details you gave, the higher your score. • Since many of you did not do well, you have an opportunity to average out your grade with a group quiz.

  6. Integrating Quotes into Responses • Billy Pilgrim was numb to death because when Valencia died, “he smiled and said, ‘So it goes’” (Vonnegut 98). • Tim was “devastated at the loss of Kiowa” (O’Brien 76).
