  6. Ms. Brown and Mrs. Mazur’s Goals for Students • My first goal is that our students are stronger writers and readers at the end of the semester; they will have tangible skills and tools. Second, I hope our students are able to interact with literature in a way that is meaningful to them, encourages them to think critically, and offers them new perspectives of the world.  • This semester we are going to be working on putting tools in your toolbox: • Literary Devices  • Grammar • Textual Comprehension (difficult and new texts) • Exposure to new texts • SO THAT • you can become critical readers • AND WE BECOME CRITICAL READERS SO THAT • “Have a fuller understanding of lives other than your own, which…  • will help you be more empathetic, and thereby…  • help you avoid getting dumped by that young woman in the first place, although more importantly…  • reading critically and attentively can give you the linguistic tools to share your own stories with more precision.”

  7. Reminders from Syllabus • Important: Blank field in gradebook does not necessarily translate to missing assignment • Input scores approximately every 2 weeks • Please monitor student progress using portal. Encourage student utilization • Consult English notebook for agenda/hw • Daily agenda & hw posted on webpage • Please have your child contact me first and cc you on email communication (including extended absences. No need to notify me of regular absences!) • If student is struggling, first question is about how s/he is spending time at home. • Students should be reading at home! • Reading and annotation will go hand in hand this year

  8. The Growth Mindset If you treat an individual as he is, he will remain as he is. But if you treat him as if he were what he ought to beand could be, he will become what he ought and could be. • -Johann Wolfgang Von Goethe I hope to partner with you (parents) to embrace and promote a “growth mindset,” which students will adopt. I aim to teach my students about embracing the "growth mindset" as they demonstrate perseverance, and show "GRIT" by working in and through challenges. The growth mindset, developed by psychologist Carol Dweck, advances the idea that abilities can be developed through dedication and hard work. Challenges and failures are not viewed as a negative, but rather as opportunities to improve both skills and learning.

  9. Teacher Philosophy We can learn from our mistakes. Process of taking responsibility, engaging in self-reflection, and devising a corrective plan of action is what leads to growth. My part / student’s part
