Developmental Math Content • MAT050 – whole numbers, fractions, decimals • MAT060 – applications of fractions, decimals, percents, ratio and proportion, order of operations, geometry • MAT070 – signed numbers, exponents, simplifying expressions, solving equations, graphing, factoring • MAT080 – factoring, rational equations, systems of equations, graphing, quadratic and radical functions, complex numbers, variation

  3. Math Placement Fall 2007 Cohort • Why are 21.3% of students placing into MAT050 – lack of preparation, lack of understanding the importance of the test, calculator dependence, previous math background? • Of 1865 with no score, 363 enrolled in a math course (22 in MAT050)

MAT070, 080 Success Rates • Fall 2009 Grades • MAT070 is required for MAT080, MAT115, , MAT121, MAT140 • MAT080 is required for MAT161, MAT171, MAT155 • 523 DFIW in MAT070, 482 DFIW in MAT080 • What distinguishes those who succeed from those who don’t – math background, study habits, motivation level, reasons for coming to CPCC?

Black Male Under-representation • Based on the American Community Survey of the US Census for 2009, Black or African-American males are approximately 14% of the population in Mecklenburg County, Black or African-American females are approximately 15% . Fall 2009 Others include Hispanic, Asian, Native American, Non-residents

  6. Success Rates of 20-24 Year Olds in MAT070, MAT080, MAT161 • Fall 2009 Grades • Total of 504 DFIW in MAT070, MAT080, MAT161 • What distinguishes those who succeed from those who don’t – math background, study habits, motivation level, reasons for coming to CPCC?

  7. Developmental ENG/REDContent • ENG 080 - Focuses on standard conventions of written English. Goals include effective sentence structure, paragraph creation, etc. • ENG 085 - Develops proficiency with reading and writing at the college level. Critical reading skills are developed. A combination of ENG 080/RED 080. • ENG 090 - Focuses on the development of effective paragraphs and adhering to standard conventions of English. • ENG 095 - Develops comprehension and analysis skills in relation to evaluating college texts. A combination of ENG 090 and RED 090.

  8. Developmental ENG/RED Content • RED 080 - Emphasis is placed on vocabulary, comprehension, and reading strategies. Teaches students to identify main ideas and supporting details. • RED 090 - Improves reading and critical thinking skills. Topics include vocabulary enhancement; extracting implied meaning; analyzing purpose, tone, and style; and drawing conclusions and responding to written material.

Areas of Interest • Students ages 20-24 have a lower success rate than other age groups. • Except for ENG080 and ENG085, online courses have a lower success rate than traditional classes. • Black males success rates are lower: • than other race/gender groups (except in RED090), • than the overall success rate for each course.
