  1. Northern New York Military Airspace Changes Effective November 20, 2008 Fred Tomaselli, Lt Col, NYANG

General Description of Changes • Effort to modify airspace took 8 years and loosely followed outline of old MOAs • Some changes are significant and affect Victor Airways (V196), Jet Routes, and VFR traffic east of I-81 and north of I-90 • Consists of MOAs overlayed by ATCAAs (above FL180) • Flexible altitude scheme - only altitudes used will be activated

A Challenge • NY Sectional to be released on Nov 20, 2008 • Montreal Sectional to be released on Mar 12, 2009 • For roughly 4 months, the Montreal Sectional will depict the old MOA information, yet the new MOAs will be open for use • Pilots need to post current information to Montreal Sectional during this period

Operational Considerations for Pilots Flying Through or To Affected Area • Check 800-223-5612, Prompt #3 for current scheduling information • Check VHF frequencies published on VFR Sectionals for “real-time” airspace status • Most MOAs and Restricted Areas– Boston Center, 135.25 • Drum MOA – Wheeler-Sack Approach, 128.25 • Be advised that airspace activation altitudes will vary from day to day • Allows for increased General Aviation use but….requires increased diligence and vigilance on part of General Aviation pilots
