Politics in Vietnam • Countrywide Elections • Ngo Dinh Diem (anti-communist leader of South Vietnam)- refused to take part in the countrywide elections • Ho Chi Minh (Communist leader in North Vietnam) • Supported the Vietcong (National Liberation Front) • 20 year conflict 1955-1975 • United States Support the South • South Vietnam becomes unstable due to corruption, failure to make land reforms, and growing presence of the Vietcong • Diem is assassinated by a U.S. supported military coup
U.S. Goes to War • The Tonkin Gulf Resolution- North Vietnamese Patrol Boat fired a torpedo at an American destroyer (U.S.S. Maddox) and missed. • Two days later, the U.S.S. Maddox more torpedoes being fired that led to bombing strikes over Northern Vietnam • Did not declare war, but granted broad military powers • Ultimately led to the U.S. entering into the war
