Welcome to 5th Grade Curriculum Night
Discipline • Each child is responsible for him/herself. • Behavior guidelines from the GPS Behavior Matrix are followed. • For minor infractions, students are given a warning and are expected to self-correct. Failure to self-correct will result in the student’s name being added to the Behavior notebook. • We also use above/below the line to guide our behavior decisions. If a student misbehaves a warning puts them on the line. If they don’t self correct, then they fall below the line and will bring home a reflection sheet. • Agendas are signed if a student does not have his/her work completed. • If a teacher has signed the agenda, the parent needs to sign acknowledging they have seen the note.
Rewards • We are using Classroom Economy within our classroom this year. Students can receive bonuses to add to their account. The entire class can also earn a bonus. • Fines may also be issued in the same ways.
Homework • Students will be assigned work daily. They will be given time to work on it in class. Whatever is not finished becomes work to do at home. • All work should be recorded in the student’s agenda. Parents should check the agenda daily to see what is due. Also, parents should sign the agenda daily to show me they are aware of what assignments are due.
Grading • Grades are updated in PowerSchool daily. Please check your child’s scores. • Missing work will be entered as a 0 and indicated with missing symbol. • Students may turn in missing work for credit. • Practice assignments are not scored but students are given credit for completing. • All tests and comprehension assignments will be scored and given a grade. • Major assignments and tests will also be given a standards score.
Reading • Teachers : Mrs. Crim, Mrs. Crosley and Mrs. Giugiu. • Materials include: Reading Street, Junior Great Books, Read Naturally, Read 180, SuccessMaker, vocabulary enrichment, and literature studies. • Each student will have an AR goal which is set by the reading teacher. Students are being encouraged to read non-fiction books. • AR comprehension scores will be used in final reading grade.
Words Their Way • Words Their Way will replace traditional spelling. • Students will be placed on a word study list based on an inventory and the phonemic needs students’ display. • Word work will be completed and practiced in class • When a test is given, words with similar patterns will be substituted. For example, if a student is studying “oa” vowel pattern and boat was on the list, float may be substituted.
