  1. Treatment of Articulation and Phonology Disorders A comprehensive and evidence-based system

  2. Selection of Target Behaviors • Goals • Long term, general statement of desired outcome • “Improve phonology” • “Improve articulation” • “Improve intelligibility” • Objectives • short term, specific statements of desired outcomes • “Produce initial /k/ in words when given a model to 90% accuracy.”

  3. Which behaviors to target? • Select target behaviors that will have impact on the client’s life • Select target behaviors that can be easily generalized • Select target behaviors that expand communication skills • Select target behaviors that are language and culturally appropriate to the client

  4. Normative or Client-specific approach? • Normative approach • Look at the norms, teach what is next in typically-developing children • Consider nothing else • Client-specific approach • Error sounds that occur frequently • Error features that affect numerous sounds • Sounds that are likely to be used by the child

  5. How many sounds or patterns to teach? • Depends on client • Depends on clinician • Approaches to intervention for either 1-2 sounds/patterns or for numerous errors

  6. Baselines • Once potential target behaviors are identified, then baselines are derived • Baselines provide quantitative pre-treatment data • Gives true targets • Used to measure progress • If no progress, treatment is modified

  7. Procedures to get baselines • Use measurable terms and specific behaviors • Produce initial /s/ in words • Prepare stimulus items • Be careful in stimulus selection! • Prepare a record form • Administer trials

  8. Writing measurable objectives • Articulation • You are trying to get correct production of a sound • Phonology • You are trying to get production of a feature or rule

  9. Components of objective • Who? • Will do what? • Under what condition? • To what level of accuracy?

  10. Examples of objectives • Pages 465-467 in textbook
