Environment and Health Linkage is important! • Health, Environment and Development Linkages • So focus on “Health and Environment” not just “Environmental Health”? • Health in the Health Sector Vs. Health in Other Sectors • “Public Health Policy” to “Healthy Public Policy” • Health is everybody’s business – human wellbeing and survival • Awareness of the environment and health linkages • Advantage of dialogue for operational opportunities • Convergence rather than isolation - partnership

  4. First High-Level Meeting • Held in Manila in 2004 • Coordinated by UNEP, WHO and ADB • The idea of a Ministers’ Forum – the necessity for two sectors to dialogue • The relevance of a Regional Charter

  5. Second High-Level Meeting • Held in Bangkok in 2005 • Developed the Draft Charter • Identified six priority environment and health concerns • Plans for the Ministers’ Forum firmed up • RTG offered to host the Ministers Forum

Draft Charter of the Regional Forum – Framework for Cooperation Objective: • The general objective of this regional initiative is to effectively deal with the environmental health problems within countries and among themselves by increasing the capacity of Southeast and East Asian countries on environmental health management.

  7. Draft Charter: Priorities for 2007-2010 • Air quality • Water supply, hygiene and sanitation • Solid and hazardous waste • Toxic chemicals and hazardous substances • Climate change, ozone layer depletion and ecosystem changes • Contingency planning, preparedness and response in environmental health emergencies

  9. Establishment of Thematic Working Groups * Draft Charter states that TWG Chairs are Government Institutions

Development of Work Plans for Thematic Working Groups • TWG members communicated mainly through emails; some TWGs had meetings back to back with other events: • Air quality TWG in Seoul; • Water TWG in Beijing • Chemical TWG in Bangkok • Climate Change TWG in Kuala Lumpur • Contingency planning, preparedness and response EH emergency TWG in Manila • Three year Work Plan include: • environment and health linkages • proposed activities • expected outputs • required resources
