After reading Section 10.2, you should know: • properties of a liquid • the difference between the terms evaporation, vaporization and condensation • how the boiling point is affected by pressure The Nature of LiquidsSection 10.2
Liquids Intermolecular forces - attraction between molecules of a liquid What’s the difference? Vaporization - Evaporation - when a liquid changes into a gas when a liquid changes into a gas at the surface of the liquid when the liquid is not boiling
Evaporation • Can only occur in an open container • In a closed container, the liquid and gas molecules establish equilibrium http://www.lmpc.edu.au/Resources/Science/water_animations/equilibrium1.htm
Boiling Point (bp) • Temperature at which liquid molecules obtain enough kinetic energy to vaporize • A substance’s bp can change based on a change in pressure • If the atmospheric pressure less, than the boiling point of the liquid is lower than it’s normal bp • Water will boil around 90-95 degrees in the mountains because the pressure is less
