The wanderers of the ocean Plankton
Two Categories • Autotrophic • Photosynthetic • Responsible for 92% of marine primary production • Heterotrophic • Primary and secondary Consumers Phytoplankton Zooplankton
Holoplankton • Organisms that live as plankton their entire lives.
Meroplankton • Organisms that live part of their lives as plankton, but may grow into nekton or benthos.
Meroplankton Cone Shell larva Cone Shell adult
Diatoms • The most efficient photosynthesizers known. • Most dominant and productive of phytoplankton • Have a rigid cell wall made of silica called a frustule.
Dinoflagellates • 2nd most abundant phytoplankton • Characterized by one or two whip-like flagella • Most are autotrophs
Coccolithophores • Single-cell autotrophs • Consist of shells called coccolithswhich are made of calcium carbonate.
Silicoflagellates • Both autotrophic and heterotrophic • Simpler than diatoms • Internal supporting structures made of silica
Cyanophytes • Bacteria with chlorophyll, so they’re… • They’re consumed by heterotrophic bacteria
