National Science Foundation Merit Review Criteria • What is the intellectual merit of the proposed activity? • What are the broader impacts of the proposed activity?
Intellectual Merit • How important is the proposed activity to advancing knowledge and understanding within its own field or across different fields? • How well qualified is the proposer (individual or team) to conduct the project? • To what extent does the proposed activity suggest/explore creative, original, or potentially transformative concepts? • How well conceived and organized is the proposed activity? • Is there sufficient access to resources?
Broader Impacts • Advancement of discovery and understanding while promoting teaching, training and learning • Participation of underrepresented groups • Enhancement of infrastructure for research and education • Dissemination of results to enhance scientific and technological understanding • Benefits to society Any proposal that does not address these criteria in the Project Summary will be returned without review.
