Strength of storms • It depends on the strength of the winds • They usually form in the pacific. • The strength of Katrina was a category 4 when it hit Louisiana. • Hurricane Rita changed from category 5 to 4 on. • Rita’s winds are 165mph.
Damages • Katrina caused more than 6 billion dollars in damage. • Although it was a category 4 it only managed to kill aprox. 900 people. • The city of New Orleans was damage by aftermath of Katrina. • Katrina didn’t do the damage it was levees breaking. Damages to the economy of the U.S. cost gas prizes to go up a lot.
Will gas go up again? • Yes it will go up because consumption will go up. • Oil rigs will shut down and production will go down. • If there is less production and more demand gas will obviously will go up. • It will not go down for a while because fixing the oil rigs and refineries will of the coast will take some time. • It if comes down it will never come below 2 dollars a gal.
How long will It take to rebuild? • It depends on how George W. Bush handles the situation. • Over 5 years because you will have to repopulate New Orleans and build new building. • If the levees a fixed it will take longer because more money will be needed. • It also depends on the damage of the hurricane.
What will happen in DFW • Because the hurricane is very far off of here we will probably only see a lot of rain. • It also depends on the route it takes. • If it goes north we will get less rain. • We will get more evacuees from New Orleans and the city will get crowded.
What will happen to Galveston / Houston • Galveston will most likely get hit by floods. • Tourism will go down due to the damage. • It won’t be as bad as the the hurricane in the 1900’s
What happened to Galveston? • In September 1900 a hurricane hit Galveston Texas, killing more than 6,000 people sixty years later, category 5 hurricane Carla came ashore and caused more than $300 million in damage.
Naming hurricanes • Hundreds of years ago hurricanes were named after saints on the day that they struck. • During WWII they began to use female names. • At the World Meteorological Organization it was decided that hurricanes were to be given French, Spanish, Dutch and English names because they affected different nations and were spotted by the public.
