319 Grant Project Funding • Willamette Valley: • Targeted towards projects or land management activities which may reduce stream temperature, bacteria and mercury in surface water and nitrates in the Ground Water Management Area. • Cover crops • Field buffers, riparian buffers • Irrigation management • Residue management • Agricultural waste management
Project: Kiger Island Blues Drip Irrigation 319 grant • 8 acre Blueberry Field • Overhead irrigation • Changed to drip irrigation for increased efficiency
Muddy Mess: • Horses confined • Manure not covered
Travel Lane: • Water is not directed away from building • Gutters not functional • Collection of manure difficult
Side yard excavated and sloped away from barn. • Geo-textile fabric and rock installed
Summer 2009 • Installation of three bin composting facility
Swale restoration • Fence in place, agricultural activities to left • 200 foot length, 40 foot width buffer • Remove invasive species • Plant native species
Upcoming projects through 319 grant • Greasy Creek Riparian buffer and fencing • 750’ x 35’ buffer • Watkins Creek Riparian buffer and fencing • 1500’ fence and 35’ both sides of creek • Hesthavn Riparian planting and rainwater catchment • Irrigation nozzle replacement
OSU Animal Sciences Conservation Reserve Enhancement Program • !53 Acres Riparian Forest Buffer • 37,200’ Fence (~7 miles) • 11 Watering facilities • 4 stream crossings
North Benton County • 188.4 ac. Riparian Forest Buffer • 84,152” fence (16 miles) • 20 stream crossings • 23 watering facilities
Education and Outreach through 319 grant • Irrigation Water Management Workshop • Targeted all landowners in GWMA • 16 people attended, 10 presenters
Workshops • Co-hosted with OSU Extension • Horses and Mud Workshop • Rural Living Basics
Upcoming riparian workshop and tour targeted to the Ground Water Management Area
Presented information on GWMA to various groups • Watershed Council meetings • Local Advisory Committee for Agricultural Water Quality Management Area • BSWCD Annual meetings • Stewardship groups • BSWCD Quarterly Newsletter • Benton County Stormwater
What are the Conservation Issues and Opportunities on the horizon?
Issue: Lack of vegetation along drainageways spraying out vegetation along fields
Solution: Leave native vegetation & control weeds
Reseed (Picture from Yamhill SWCD) Working with landowners to develop alternative vegetative management plans for Benton County Roadside No-spray Program
Issue: Specialty crops lack protection from erosion Avoid cultivating between rows in the fall and leave volunteer vegetation. This field has a cover crop between the rows. Filter strip and sediment basin capture sediment from surface runoff. Filter strips slow runoff down this field, lessening erosion.
Improving and Protecting Rural StormwaterEducation Partnership with Benton County
Soil Quality Program • Currently developing two advisory councils for agriculture and construction • Identify current research and partners • Identify 10 agricultural sites for SQ measurements • Hold workshops/tours for landowners and construction professionals
