Our Finding Study on Cancer due to Tobaco and its effects Interview with an ex-smoker, Gutka & Pan Eater
Biography • Male • 28 years old • Started smoking at age 16 • More than 5 years of smoking habit
The first time… • I was with my friends in school, my friends were smoking and persuaded me to smoke. • I rejected but they called me a “Coward” • I didn’t want to smoke, but I wanted to show that I was not a coward….. I Could not say ‘NO’
In the trap… • Initially, I only smoked after my parents went out of the house, after school and in parties. • As time past by, I started smoking frequently. I used to start and end my day with a puff. • I used to get an urge to smoke in the morning, after meals, during recess time, after school, …..anytime!!
What next? • Bad skin • My teeth turned yellow • Foul smell in my breath • My mood was bad mostly and I got agitated easily • I had frequent quarrels with siblings and parents • I lost interest in studies
Came to my senses • I can never forget that day – A visit to my uncle in the hospital. He was suffering from lung cancer. • He was a heavy smoker for the past 20 years. He was regretting “Why I couldn’t say NO?” • A question appeared in my mind - “Would I suffer like him in future?” • The answer was “YES”…………. I must stop smoking
What did I do? • I apologized to my parents • I asked for help from counselor • I set a quit date and threw away my cigarettes • I kept away from those friends who smoke • I had to be patient with the withdrawal symptoms – where I had headache, sore throat, dry mouth, lack of energy; I could think of nothing else but smoking • I kept myself busy to get over the feeling of smoking • I started concentrating on my studies
My advice for young generation Don’t start SMOKING or else, you will regret……
Why did he start smoking? • Curiosity • Peer pressure • Family Influence • Portraying “macho” and cool personality • Media influence - Cigarette advertisement
Why was his health affected? • Bad Skin • Smoking restricts blood vessels. Therefore, it prevents oxygen and nutrients from getting to the skin. This makes the skin pale and unhealthy. • Yellow teeth and bad breath • Tar present in the cigarettes stains a smoker's teeth with brownish-yellow colour which also causes bad breath.
Why was he changed? • Bad mood • Due to lack of nicotine in smokers’ body, he/she becomes anxious, agitated and restless. • Quarrels with parents and siblings • Due to bad mood, lack of interest in studies and increase in demand of pocket money.
Our Learning • Smoking does not only causes health problems but also strain the family relationships. • We have to avoid smoking in order to have healthy life style.
How can we help to reduce smoking in the community? • Organize anti-smoking campaign • Form a task force to educate community from time-to-time • Impose higher fine to students who are guilty of smoking • Counsel students who are trapped in the deadly trap
