  2. What is YSAF? • Similar to Academic League • Topics: History, Science, Literature, Math, General Knowledge, Current Events • One-day competition at Scripps Ranch High School • Three preliminary rounds, one championship round

Competition Structure • Preliminary Rounds- 30 minutes • Final Match- 2, 25 minute blocks • Prelim Time-Outs: 2 time-outs per school (1 min. each) • Final Match: 5 minute intermission, 2 time-outs • Toss-Ups: Worth 3 points, Wrong Answer = -1 • Bonuses: Scored differently based on # of questions

Toss-Ups and Bonuses • Toss-Ups: Only ONE player may answer • 5 seconds to buzz in, 3 seconds to answer the question • Bonus questions normally consist of 3-5 questions • Teams can work together for 30 seconds • Team Captain then answers question for team • Teams can start working as soon as judge starts reading question

  5. Team Captains/Substitutions • Each team should have a team captain • Team captain can change with alternates • Team Captain is responsible for providing team’s answers to a bonus question or may defer to another team member • Each team must have a minimum 5 students, maximum 10 students • Teams may substitute players during time-outs

  7. Competition Day Tentative Schedule • 9:00-9:30 Registration • 9:45-10:15 Match 1 (A vs. B, C vs. D) • 10:30-11:00 Match 2 (A vs. C, B vs. D) • 11:15-11:45 Match 3 (A vs. D, B vs. C) • 11:45-1:00 Lunch • 12:15-12:45 Match 4 (If needed) • 1:00-2:00 Final Match • 2:00-2:30 Awards Ceremony

  8. Scoring • Toss-Ups: Worth 3 points, -1 for incorrect answers • Bonuses: Worth a maximum of 5 points, No Penalty • Scoring • 2 Questions (One right: 1 point , Two right: 5 points) • 3 Questions( 1, 3, 5) • 4 Questions (1, 2, 3, 5) • 5 Questions (1, 2, 3, 4, 5)

  9. Tie-Breakers • Ties will be decided by a fourth prelim. match • Four Teams: A, B, C, D • A: B, C • B: C,D • C: 0 • D: A,C • If three teams are tied, tie will break using total points • If all three point totals tied, two teams pick “Play,” one team picks a “Bye” (Fourth Match)

  10. Deadlines • Final Team Roster Submission- Jan. 10th • Competition Day – March 22, 2014 • Drop-Out
