  2. Metaphor • a term or phrase is applied to something to which it is not literally applicable in order to suggest a resemblance without using like or as • Example: “A mighty fortress is our God.”

  3. Simile • a figure of speech in which two unlike things are explicitly compare using like or as • Example: “she is like a rose.”

  4. Hyperbole • an extravagant statement or figure of speech not intended to be taken literally • Example: “to wait an eternity.”

  5. Idiom • an expression whose meaning is not predictable from the usual meanings of its constituent elements • Example: “kick the bucket”

  6. Assonance • resemblance of sounds. • Example: "that dolphin-torn, that gong-tormented sea"
