Workshop Goals • To establish a common vocabulary for our discussion of instructional technology and its integration • To overview the variety of ways in which instructional technology can be integrated into the curriculum • To strike a balance between the how to and why of educational technology USVI Department of Education SEIR*TEC/Learning Innovations

  3. What Do We Mean by “Integration”? • Ideas? • The use of technology tools by students and teachers within the classroom environment to support existing curricular goals and objectives in a variety of learning activities USVI Department of Education SEIR*TEC/Learning Innovations

Basic Questions • What do you want to teach? • Not technology! • How do you teach? • Technology tools can support a variety of different teaching methods • Technology in itself is not a method • How do your students best learn? • Think about how technology can support your students’ learning styles USVI Department of Education SEIR*TEC/Learning Innovations

  5. Bottom line? • Integrating technology is not about the tool... It’s about what is done with the tool • The technology-using teacher’s job is to find the right tool for the task USVI Department of Education SEIR*TEC/Learning Innovations

  6. Four Categories It helps to think about categories of technology tools when trying to choose the right tool for the task. • Tutorial • Applications • Exploratory • Communications USVI Department of Education SEIR*TEC/Learning Innovations

  7. Tutorial Technology • Designed to transmit information from source to student • Drill and practice • Integrated Learning Systems • Computer-based training and testing • Example, Spell-It Deluxe Davidson Suggested Grades 1 - 12 USVI Department of Education SEIR*TEC/Learning Innovations

  8. Applications Technology • “Tool” software which is devoid of content • Word processors • Database management programs • Presentation tools USVI Department of Education SEIR*TEC/Learning Innovations

  9. Word Processors • Claris Works or Microsoft Word • Writing process • Critical thinking • Basic language skills USVI Department of Education SEIR*TEC/Learning Innovations

  10. “Newswriting through time” historical newspaper project • also uses other applications such as spreadsheets and databases • Used within virtually all other technology-enriched projects • e.g., a word processor can create files which are then imported into a multimedia presentation USVI Department of Education SEIR*TEC/Learning Innovations

  11. Spreadsheets • Claris Works or Microsoft Excel • Mathematics • Critical Thinking • “Do Women Live Longer than Men” • Spreadsheet project integrates social studies, math, health, and other subjects in a hands-on interdisciplinary unit USVI Department of Education SEIR*TEC/Learning Innovations
