The effects of anabolic steroids of the male body! By: Jacob Stafford and Matt McNair
What is an anabolic steriod? • Anabolic steroid are drugs that resemble androgenic hormones like testosterone. They are consumed for the benefits of muscle growth, aggressiveness, and endurance, but these effects are controversial in their effectiveness.
How do anabolic steroid work? • The hormones in anabolic steroids stimulate the androgenic ,sex-linked functions like enlargement of the penis and testes, voice changes, hair growth on the face, axilla, and genital areas, to function more like anabolic tissues which produce muscle, bone, and red blood cells. As you can see in the picture to the side, the steroid hormone is being recepted by the cell and thus telling it to produce proteins for muscle growth.
Negative Effects of Anabolic Steroids • With males the testes will shrink and reproductive system will stop functioning at its maximum performance. With more use men can develop breasts, prostate cancer, and baldness. Animal studies have shown that AAS are addictive. Animals will self-administer AAS when given the opportunity, just as they do with other addictive drugs. The potential for AAS abusers to become addicted is consistent with their continued abuse despite physical problems.
Anabolic Steroids and Mental Health • Abuse of anabolic steroids leads to aggression and other adverse effects.Although many users feel good about themselves while on anabolic steroids, extreme mood swings can occur, including insane symptoms that could lead to violence. Researchers have also observed that users may suffer from paranoid jealousy, extreme irritability, delusions, and impaired judgment coming from feelings of invincibility.
Overview • Overall anabolic steroids are bad for the male body and can cause significant social repercussions but they have shown to help with depression and do actually in crease muscle mass along with aggression.
