‘OUTREACH’ AND ‘RECRUITMENT’ • Recruitment function was relatively small • Outreach function larger but externally funded through Aimhigher and had different objectives • Aimhigher ended, HEIs now accountable to Office for Fair Access (OFFA) for supporting Widening Participation students • Three categories of university in OFFA guidance • LSBU: shift of focus to retention and ‘success’ !
‘OUTREACH’ AND ‘RECRUITMENT’ • OFFA outreach target remains students from low socio economic backgrounds • LSBU students predominantly from local London boroughs, many from low socio- economic backgrounds • Outreach now concentrates on our feeder colleges • Objectives: better supported through application, better supported once at LSBU
TIER ONE COLLEGES RATIONALE • Tier one colleges based on: • Numbers of applications and enrolments • Quality of the relationship • Geography • Outreach history • Next year will increase from 20 to 30 institutions
TIER ONE SCHOOLS RATIONALE • Tier one schools based on: • Quality of the relationship • Geography • Outreach history • Engagement with local community • Low NS-SEC x high FSM x high GCSEs • Next year will increase from 13 to 17 schools • Also work in schools in Wandsworth, Southwark, Lambeth, Lewisham, Greenwich, Bexley, Croydon, Tower Hamlets and Newham.
SUPPORT FOR SCHOOLS/COLLEGES Primary school: Confucius Institute, Children’s University, STEM Years 7 – 8: Introduction to university (campus visit) Solar Car Challenge Years 9 – 11: Summer school Maths, English, EAL student ambassador support Years 12 – 13: Taster days (using the labs, mini lectures/seminars) Delivery of HE modules in schools and colleges Learning to Learn project Skills workshops: interviews, personal statements, research Presentations on fees and finance, scholarships LSBU Access scheme City Opportunities project HE and UCAS fairs
HOW WE WORK • Schools and Partnerships Team • Each member responsible for links with a number of tier one colleges and schools • Also linked with one Faculty • 150 student ambassadors • Faculty recruitment leads • Coordination: Widening Participation Outreach Committee (WPOC), reports to Student Recruitment Committee (SRC)
