hpc-ch community building BoF HPC for HPC June 24th, 2014
Background • In 2007, the ETH Board developed Switzerland’s National Strategic Plan for High-Performance Computing and Networking (HPCN Strategy) on behalf of the Swiss Confederation • Resolutionsadopted in 2009 by the Federal Council and Parliament • Investment costs up to 2014 amount to 172.5m CH • New building • Supercomputers (stepwise up to Petaflop) • Networking and Co-design: HP2C (now PASC)
hpc-ch • In 2009 a group of participants to ISC decided to create a HPC community in order to further develop HPC in Switzerland • The Swiss HPC Service Provider Community. Support and foster the knowledge exchange between providers of HPC systems at Swiss universities • In particular • Know the offering and organization of other Swiss HPC providers • Exchange best practices • Co-ordinate activities • Discuss developments in HPC
Milestones • First gathering together • During final reception at ISC9 in Hamburg (CSCS, UniZh, EPFL, Uni Basel) • First getting together • October 2009, University of Zurich • First forum • Spring 2010, EPF Lausanne • Creation of industry branch • Spring 2013
Forums • 2009 • Getting Together (University of Zurich) • 2010 • Operating Systems for HPC and Installation Methods (EPFL) • Parallel File Systems for HPC (ETH Zurich) • 2011 • Scheduler and Queuing Systems (PSI) • Use of GPU and Accelerators for HPC (University of Basel) • 2012 • Infrastructure for HPC (EMPA) • Handling huge amount of data for HPC (CSCS & USI) • 2013 • HPC in Swiss Industry (Novartis) • Hardware Life-Cycle and User Policies for HPC systems (EPFL) • 2014 • Cloud computing and virtualisation for HPC (ETH Zurich / Uni Zurich) • Monitoring and reporting in HPC (University of Bern)
