Types of Colleges: • 2-year community college or junior college • 4-year college/university • Public - state funded, generally larger in size, cost of tuition for state resident is significantly lower • Private - private funding, generally smaller in size, cost for all students is the same, tend to be more generous with financial aid

  3. Components of the Admission Package: • Course Rigor - competitive courses like Honors and Advanced Placement • Grades - cumulative (9th-11th) grade point average • Test Scores - release scores from testing agency to college • SAT Reasoning Test • ACT (writing optional but recommended) • SAT Subject tests - college specific • Teacher Recommendations - REQUIRE minimum 2 week advance notice AND resume • Resume - activities from grades 9-12 - schools looking for depth; sample format available • Essay • Interview • Displayed interests

Testing • SAT: Reasoning Test (www.collegeboard.org) • $45.00, offered seven times a school year at various locations • Critical Reading • Math - includes Algebra 2 • Writing - multiple choice + essay • Send scores to 4 college/universities or programs for free at time of registration • ACT (www.actstudent.org) • $47.00 (with writing), offered six times a school year at various locations • English • Reading • Math • Science • OPTIONAL Writing Section - required by many colleges • Send scores to 4 colleges/universities or programs for free at time of registration • SAT: Subject Test - college specific (www.collegeboard.org) • Can take up to three subjects on one test date • Fee waivers available to Juniors and Seniors who qualify for free/reduced lunch. Request waiver prior to registering for test(s). • Most colleges and universities take best scores from separate test dates. Check with individual college. • Kalaheo High School Code is 120143.

College Preparation • Attend College/University Speaker Sessions at Kalaheo High School – announced in school and on the website • Attend Off-campus Receptions usually held at a hotel • Attend the College & Career Fair on November 13, 2009 at the Neal S. Blaisdell Exhibition Hall (hawaiiccfair.org) and/or the NACAC College Fair on April 22, 2010 (nacacnet.org) • Attend Financial Aid Night at Kalaheo in January 2010 • Visit Colleges/Universities during school breaks

  8. Transcripts: • Transcript Request - REQUIRE minimum 3 business day turn around time, parent signature required, $1.00 per request; submit to the office room 6. Questions on the status of processing, contact the Student Service office at #254-7900 x202 or the Registrar. • Numerical SAT/ACT test scores posted if high school code is provided at the time of registration for the SAT or ACT. Most colleges/universities require the test scores to be sent directly from the testing agency. • Essay (both SAT/ACT) is RELEASED only from the testing agency. Many colleges REQUIRE the essay and extra cost incurred if released after the time of registration.
