SPANISH CONSTITUTION Competences of the Autonomous Communities in Education • Section 148.17 • Promotion of culture, research and, when applicable, teaching the Autonomous Community language. • Section 150 • The Autonomous Communities have the authority to dictate their own legislative norms within the framework of the principles, bases and rules established by the national law. • Establish the languages curricula of the Autonomous Communities.

Curricula Degrees • CHILDREN’S EDUCATION Article 4 establishes that students must be aware of the existence of the two spoken languages in the Valencian Community. • PRIMARY EDUCATION As laid down in Article 3, Valencian students must understand and produce oral and written messages both in Valencian and in Spanish, in accordance with the different intentions and communicative contexts. They must also understand and produce oral and written messages, which are simple and within a context, in a foreign language.
Curricula Degrees • SECONDARY EDUCATION Article 3 dictates that students must understand and produce oral and written messages with proficiency, independence and creativity in Spanish and in Valencian, as well as display an attitude of interest and respect for other cultures and languages. • BATXILLERAT (LAST TWO YEARS OF HIGH SCHOOL) According to Article 3, students must able to master Valencian and Spanish.

Multilingual Education Programmes • They include the foreign language, as a language in which other subjects are taught, from the first course of Primary Education. (Valencian, Spanish and the foreign language). • Why? • Because the Valencian Community establishes the following objectives: • To achieve a greater command of the three curricula languages. • To obtain a higher level of achievement in the other subjects. • To encourage tolerant and respectful attitudes for other languages and cultures. • To contribute efficiently to multilinguism.
