Advantages and Disadvantages By Mr. Dan Perez Energy Resources
Basic Power Plant Click here for a basic power plant animation.
Biomass - Advantages • Uses waste materials • Fuel tends to be cheap • Puts less demand on fossil fuels
Biomass - Disadvantages • Getting large amounts of fuel can be difficult • Creates pollution • Some waste materials are not available year round
Geothermal - Advantages • No pollution • Power stations don’t take up much room • No fuel is needed • Once built, energy needed to run a power station is almost free
Geothermal - Disadvantages • Very few locations where power stations can be built • Some sites may run out of steam • Hazardous materials could come up and be difficult to safely dispose
Hydropower - Advantages • Once dam is built, energy is almost free • No pollution • Very reliable • Can be prepared for high demand • Electricity can be generated constantly
Hydropower - Disadvantages • Dams are very expensive • Floods will be cause up stream disturbing animal life and civilizations • Finding sites can be difficult • Water quality and quantity can be affected downstream
Solar - Advantages • Solar energy is free • No pollution • Can provide electricity to remote places • Good for low power uses
Solar - Disadvantages • Doesn’t work at night • Very expensive to build power stations • Need to be in a sunny environment
Hydrogen - Advantages • Can store energy as well as be an “Energy Carrier” • Can be safe for the environment • Can provide energy in remote places
Hydrogen - Disadvantages • Can produce small amounts of pollution • Hydrogen vehicle vs. Hydrogen Fuel Stations • Fuel cells are expensive • Public not informed on Hydrogen Safety • Need facilities to store energy
Wind - Advantages • Wind is free • No pollution • Land below can still be used for farming • Can be used as tourist attractions • Good for electricity in remote areas
Wind - Disadvantages • Wind is not predictable • Land near coastlines can be expensive • Doesn’t look good • Bird Killers • Can disturb television reception • Can be noisy
Coal (Fossil Fuel) - Advantages • Coal is cheap • Large amounts of electricity can be created • Power stations can be built almost anywhere
Coal (Fossil Fuel) - Disadvantages • Heavy polluter • Mining for coal can be dangerous. Strip mining destroys landscapes • Needs large amounts of fuel
Natural Gas (Fossil Fuel) – Advantages • Transporting to power station is easy • Gas-fired power stations are very efficient • Can be built almost anywhere as long a fuel can be provided.
Natural Gas (Fossil Fuels) – Disadvantages • Creates pollution • Affects the environment when produced, transported, or stored • Can cause explosions.
Oil (Fossil Fuel) - Advantages • It’s cheap • Very diverse with uses.
Oil (Fossil Fuel) - Disadvantages • Exploring for oil can disturb ocean habitats • Oil spills can harm wild life (BP Spill) • Pollution can be produced from petroleum factories
Nuclear - Advantages • Nuclear costs about the same as coal (cheap) • Does not contribute greenhouse gasses (CO2) • Huge amounts of energy with little fuel • Small amount of wastes • It is reliable
Nuclear - Disadvantages • The waste is radioactive • Lots of money has to be spent on safety • Extremely dangerous if something goes wrong
Nonrenewable vs. Renewable We will go through this animation to decide what will be more suitable for our energy needs, and figure what will be the best plan for our school. Fossil Energy System Renewable Energy System
