11.2 Operations with Radical Expressions Like Radicals: Radicals that have the same radicand. Unlike Radicals: Radicals that do NOT have the same radicand. NOTE: The radical must be completely simplified before determining if the are like or unlike.
Combine the following, if possible. Ex. 1 1. Are they completely simplified? Yes 2. Are they ‘like’? Yes Yes, for both, so add the leading numbers together and keep the radical.
1. Are they completely simplified? No, so you must simplify first. 2. After simplifying, are they ‘like’? Yes, so combine.
