  3. Angelo Roncallis Kindheit Papst Johannes der XXIII. hieß mit bürgerlichem Namen Angelo Giuseppe Roncalli. Er wurde am 25. November 1881 in Sotto il Monte (Bergamo) geboren. Mit seinem Vater Giovanni Battista, seiner Mutter Marianna Mazzola und seinen zwölf Geschwistern lebte er in ärmlichen Verhältnissen am Rand der Alpen.

  5. Roncallis Schulzeit Angelo Giuseppe Roncalli lebte in einer sehr vertrauensvollen Familie. Schon früh hatte Angelo den Wunsch, Priester zu werden. Durch den Gemeindepfarrer Don Rebuzzini wurde sein Talent erkannt und es konnte gefördert werden. Der Pfarrer gab ihm auch privaten Lateinunterricht. Im Oktober 1892 ging er ins Knabenseminar von Bergamo. Später wechselte er in das Große Seminar.

  7. Roncallis Jugend 1901 wurde er dann zur Fortsetzung seines Theologiestudiums nach Rom geschickt, wo er 1904 zum Priester geweiht wurde. Danach schrieb er sich in einen Kurs für Kirchenrecht ein. Der neue Bischof von Bergamo Radini Tedeschi berief ihn als Sekretär und Mitarbeiter in die Heimatdiözese zurück. Als Italien in den Ersten Weltkrieg eintrat, wurde auch Roncalli zum Militärdienst eingezogen. Nach dem Tod des Bischofs ernannte ihn der Nachfolger zum Spiritual des Seminars von Bergamo.

  9. Roncallis Weg zum Papst Roncalli wurde am 10. August 1904 zum Priester geweiht. Von 1905 bis 1914 wurde er vom Bischof von Bergamo als Sekretär gewählt und unternahm mit ihm viele Auslandsreisen. Roncalli blieb seinem Seminar in Bergamo als Professor weiterhin verpflichtet und lehrte dort Kirchengeschichte. Als der Bischof Radini – Tedeschi verstorben war, verlor Roncalli sein Sekretärsamt. Am 23. Mai 1915 wurde Roncalli wegen der Kriegserklärung Italiens an Österreich – Ungarn als Sanitätssoldat eingezogen. Als der Krieg vorbei war wurde er Jugend – und Studentenpfarrer. Am 12. Januar 1953 wurde Roncalli von Papst Pius XII. zum Kardinal und Patriarchen von Venedig ernannt.
