WHAT IS IT? • Dementia-is a loss of brain function that occurs with certain diseases.
Types of dementia • Cortial Dementia-memory, thinking, behavior (brain’s cortex) • Subcortial Dementia- changes in emotions & movements (below the cortex of brain) • Progressive Dementia- worse over time, interferes cognitive abilities a lot more. • Primary Dementia- doesn’t result from another disease (just like Alzheimer’s) • Secondary Dementia- physical disease or injury
EARLY STAGE Difficulty of mental function Starts off as FOGETFULLNESS! Perception Emotional Behavior Personality Cognitive Tools- such as, judgemtent or abstract thinking. Performing Tasks
Middle stage Symptoms are obvious, take control. Forgetting events in the past Change in sleep patterns Not speaking correctly Hallucinations Delusions Difficulty in dressing
End stage No longer understand Family members??? Incontinence Trouble Swallowing Perform daily activities Eating Dressing Bathing
