What is an example of a policy that you have experienced in your daily life?
Policy • Policy is a decision on a particular issue that lasts or endures over time. • Policy is created to guide other decisions, actions and behaviours in order to achieve an objective or common good.
Policy • There are a number of different kinds of policies. • There may be consequences if a policy is not followed.

Example #1 • Who? • Family • What? • Policy: Everyone has to be at the dinner table at 7:00PM sharp. Everyone can only have 1 hour of technology per night (TV, Video Games, Internet). • Why? • To increase the amount of quality time family spends with each other.
Example #2 • Who? • School • What? • Policy:To block sites like YouTube and Facebook during class time (sites are open during lunch and spare periods). • Why? • To make sure that people spend their time on the library computers effectively.
Example #3 • Who? • Municipal Governments in Ontario • What? • Policy: Bi-weekly collection of roadside garbage. • Why? • To encourage residents to recycle through the Blue Box program and separate compostable materials in the Green Bin program.
Example #4 • Who? • Provincial Government Ontario • What? • Policy: No tolerance policy for drinking and driving – automatic driver’s licence suspension with a blood alcohol concentration between 0.05 and 0.08. • Why? • To remove dangerous drivers from Ontario’s roads.
Policy Making Tips • Make sure you have a clear understanding of the issue or problem • Be realistic and practical • Be creative in your solutions • Carefully consider all of the groups that both influence and are impacted by policy decisions • Think carefully about what problem your policy responds to - why is your policy the best way to respond to the issue?
