Sea shells consist of calcium carbonate (calcite) which biomineralizes into right- or left-handed spirals. Inspired by Nature, Switzer and his students are using electrochemial biomineralization to produce chiral architectures of calcite. In the figure, the calcite was produced using tartaric acid (top), malic acid (middle), and aspartic acid (bottom) to control the chiral morphology. J. Am. Chem. Soc., (2007)
