Activity: Where Oh Where does my Water Flow?Parts of a River Basin Vocabulary Headwaters: Also called the source. It is the beginning of the river. The headwaters are often located in mountains. Mouth: The mouth is the place where a river flows into a larger body of water, such as another river, a lake or an ocean Floodplain: The floodplain is relatively flat land stretching from either side of a river, which may flood during heavy rain. The soil here is usually very rich and good for growing food. Tributary: A smaller stream or river that joins a larger stream or main river Main Channel/Main River: The main river channel is the primary channel and course of a river Watershed/River Basin/ Drainage Basin: The tract of land drained by a river and its tributaries. People’s actions within a watershed can affect the overall quality of its rivers. Divide: Boundary that marks the outermost limit of a watershed.
