Intro to HTML Editors • An HTML editor is a software application for creating web pages • Most HTML editors are known as WYSIWYG (What You See Is What You Get) • WYSIWYG HTML editors provide an editing interface which resembles how the page will be displayed in a web browser.
Intro to HTML Editors cont. • Examples of HTML Editors: • WordPress • Microsoft Publisher • Adobe Dreamweaver • KompoZer • HTML Editor software can range from hundreds of dollars (Adobe Dreamweaver) to free (KompoZer)
Intro to HTML Editors cont. • Many of these editors do not require any knowledge of HTML. • But, knowing HTML allows the user to troubleshoot as well as add additional features • Some of these editors store pages in a proprietary format and then export them as HTML. Others, generally simpler WYSIWYG editors are designed to work directly with HTML files.
Intro to HTML Editors cont. • One of the most basic WYSIWYG editors is Microsoft Publisher. • Creating and editing a webpage in Microsoft Publisher is very easy and the program creates the HTML code for you. • The steps to creating a website using MS Publisher is as followed:
Using MS Publisher • Open the Microsoft Publisher program. Click File > New from the menu at the top of the screen. • Select Web Sites and Email in the New Publication dialog box. Click on Web Sites in the drop-down menu. • Choose Easy Web Site Builder, 3-Page Web Site, Product Sales, or Professional Services.
Using MS Publisher cont. • Then choose which design you’d like in the right hand menu. Keep in mind… colors, layout, and other options can be changed on any of these templates. • Fill in your personal info on the pop-up dialog box or press Cancel if you would not like this info included. • Click on any of the website options from the left-side window. You can change color schemes, navigation bar options, font schemes, and many more.
Using MS Publisher cont. • Start editing your web page. Add text and graphics to showcase your purpose. Much like PowerPoint, text boxes can be added or removed, nothing is fixed. • To insert a new page: Click Insert > Page • To navigate between pages: click the page menu at the bottom of the screen
Using MS Publisher cont. • To edit the navigation bar: Click any where in the navigation bar to select it and then click the magic wand • The menu on the left will allow you to add, remove, reorder, re-orient, and change design of the navigation menu. • Any changes made to the navigation will be reflected on all other pages
Using MS Publisher cont. • To view your website: Go to File > Web PagePreview • Upon viewing your website using an internet browser, verify all links work and everything looks like you want it to.
