NC SCOS 4th grade Science Competency Goal #2 • The learner will conduct investigations and use appropriate technology to build an understanding of the composition and uses of rocks and minerals.
Teaching for Memory • Students will be given teacher-constructed stories to read about each mineral. Each story will be silly in nature, but will personify each mineral according to its characteristics. • The purpose of the stories is to help students easily retain important information about each mineral in a user-friendly way.
Teaching for Analytical Learning • After an introduction to mineral classification on the basis of color, luster, magnetism, streak color, and hardness, students will be put into pairs and given an incomplete mineral chart to fill in as well as a set of minerals to evaluate for filling in the chart. • http://students.unca.edu/eamostel/student/mineral%20chart.htm
Teaching for Practical Learning • All students will have the chance to view five different minerals and learn about everyday uses of each one. • Students will most likely be amazed when they realize that they are constantly in contact with many different minerals. • http://students.unca.edu/eamostel/student/index.asp
Teaching for Creative learning • Students will be entering a miniature (shoe-box-size) “float” for the National Festival of Minerals parade in the fictitious city of Little Bedrock! All students will get a chance to: • Explore one mineral extensively • Express themselves creatively for the purpose of educating others and earning a grade • Learn about the four other minerals by viewing other students’ floats
