The life of Eric Carle His Life • Eric Carle was born in Syracuse, New York. When Eric Carle was six years old he moved to Germany with his parents. Eric grew up there and graduated form AkademiederbildendenKünste, a prestigious art school. In 1952, he moved back to New York and found a job as a graphic designer. • The first book Eric Carle illustrated was “Brown Bear Brown Bear, What do you See?” written by Bill Martin Jr. • The first book Eric Carle wrote was 1,2,3 to the Zoo and followed by The Very Hungry Caterpillar. • Eric Carle has won many awards but here are a few, • Officer’s Cross of the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany, 2001 • Silver Medal from the City of Milano, Italy, 1989 • Kurt Vonnegut Jr. Literature Award presented by the Indianapolis-Marion County Public Library, 2008 • Honorary Degree from Bates College, Lewiston, ME, 2007 Career Awards
