History of Philistinism • In the Old Testamant, the Philistines were enemies of the Israelites. In a famous biblical story, David successfully fought the giant philistine warrior, Goliath.
History modern day usage • In modern usage, “Philistine” refers to a person with no appreciation for culture. Whose taste is commonplace such attitiude is reffered to “philistinism”.
Examples • Sandra was pleasantly surprised when her boyfriend surprised her with tickets to the opera; she often teased him about being a philistine whose idea of culture was an evening of watching wrestling. • My friend is a hypocrite, she say’s quit being a philistine but spends her spare time watching jersey shore.
Continued examples • It’s maybe because of philistine tendencies, but I did not enjoy the opera show.
