Enter Specialised Diplomas • The qualification identified in the 14-19 Implementation Plan and based on the Tomlinson Diploma model. • Implementation of 14 lines of learning is being phased in up to 2013, when all Diplomas must be available to all 14-19 learners. • The “first five lines” to be introduced in September 2008.
About Specialised Diploma The status of Diplomas: • “Applied” courses rather than “Vocational” • Target groups are all learners • Not designed to make learners “job ready” but able to apply knowledge and skills to train and work in their chosen sector. • Develop transferable skills for employment and equip for progress to the highest level jobs. • Suitable for progression to employment and HE

Diploma Equivalence • Level 1 600 glh- 4-5 GCSE D-G equivalent • Level 2 800 glh- 5-6 GCSE A-C equivalent • Level 3 1080 glh- 3 ‘A’ Level equivalent • Units-60 glh or half units of 30 glh and multiples of these.
Diploma Structure • Principal Learning (240-540 glh) • Units of assessment including 50% “applied” learning: knowledge, understanding, skills and attitudes that support progress through the line of learning into the sector. Content guided learning hours (glh) increases with Level.
Diploma Structure • Generic Learning (180-360 glh) • Functional Skills (Maths, English and IT) (60 glh each) • Levels E1, E2, E3, L1 and L2. Not L3 • Project (60 glh at L1 and L2 and 120 glh at L3) • Personal Learning and thinking skills (60glh) • Work Experience 10 days (minimum)

Diploma Structure • Flexibility • At Level 1, up to 25% Principal Learning content may be from another Line of Learning. • Additional/Specialised Learning (ASL) may be 2 GCSEs (for L1/L2) or 1 A/AS Level (for L3). • ASL may be other qualifications. • ASL may be units from NVQs. • Foundation Learning Tier may be introduced in Year 9 or Entry Level.

Diploma Gateway Timetable • 16th October to 1st November • Resources survey of potential providers • 20th November • Gateway Proposal Self-Assessment completed for all Lines of Learning (LoL) except Construction & Built Environment • 10th December • Local Authority commentary added and Gateway Proposal sent off for assessment by Regional Panel • April 2007 • Results of Gateway Proposal bids. • April 2007 onwards • Awarding Body accreditation of local Diploma programmes and Functional Skills.
