Specialised Diplomas - Context 1 The White Paper identified proposals to create Specialised Diplomas in 14 broad sector areas at Levels1 (foundation), 2 (intermediate) and 3 (advanced) to provide a highly-valued applied route for learners that genuinely reflects the needs of employers. (DfES Pathfinder Specification) The 14 Specialised Diplomas: 2008: Engineering / Health and social care / ICT / Creative and media / Construction and the built environment 2009: Land-based and environment / Manufacturing / Hair and beauty / Business administration and finance / Hospitality and catering 2010: Public services / Sport and leisure / Retail / Travel and tourism
Specialised Diplomas - Context 2 Six 11 – 19 schools containing approx. 7,000 pupils (including 820 Post 16 students) City of Bristol FE College providing for 18,000 students (including one site in Kingswood area) Kingswood - low unemployment - high % of self-employed / small employers - very low HE experience of parents - 2005 5 x A* - C GCSE = 52%

Specialised Diplomas - Principles 1 • Currently working with existing qualifications e.g. BTEC courses, GCSEs,etc • New diploma specifications being designed by Diploma Development Partnerships • All qualifications being unitised • Specialised Diplomas will be in units with agreed “rules of combination” • Specialised Diplomas must be deliverable as part of an inclusive curriculum
Specialised Diplomas - Actions 2 • Cross Partnership Principal Learning Day for 2006: • Monday for Year 10 (up to six hours) • Courses from options which will form basis of first 5 Diplomas • Includes college link and H / SBL / G shared courses • No movement between centres this year (insufficient lead time for guidance) • Greater opportunities for WBL • Subject staff developing teaching programmes accordingly • Q: Is 6 hours enough / too much?

Specialised Diplomas - Next Steps • Declaration of each diploma specification and analysis of requirements • Agreement of local provision • Development of new resources / facilities accordingly • Planning for Level 3: 3 days for Specialised Diplomas? • Further integration of personal development curriculum, functional skills, the extended project • Integration with area prospectus and publication of local progression routes • Online diploma management tools for staff and students and other guidance materials
