PACN TRAINING FOR CHEMISTRY TEACHERS Apred School, Kigali,Rwanda 28-30 August 09
Training team • Jean M Johnson, RSC, UK • Pat Johnson, RSC, UK • Byamugisha Alex, Uganda • Asiimwe Willy, Uganda Thank you to Kalisa Andrew, Headmaster of Apred School
The Rwandan National Examinations Council is examining students on science experiments for the very first time this year Speaking to The New Times, Apred Headmaster, Andrew, said, ‘We have been teaching science subjects theoretically, but now that there are going to be practical exams …… the acceptance of trainers from the RSC to train our teachers in chemistry practical has come at the right time and clearly demonstrates that they have great affection for the people of Rwanda’
The team Willy Alex Pat Jean
Qualitative analysis We had to start with OL work, because teachers had very little practical experience; chemistry on re-useable plastic sheets was also new!
Teachers knew the theory, but a reaction such as this confirmatory test for lead ions was unfamiliar
This double indicator titration gave a first taste of volumetric skills for many
Alex explains the theory behind using two indicators to analyse a mixture
Titration of hydrogen peroxide solution with potassium manganate (VII) Our team approach helped teachers to develop the precision expected by examiners
Observing a silver mirror for the first time was exciting ………….. ……… but most needed help in the interpretation of organic reactions
By day 3 teachers could easily explain their thiosulphate titration to a visiting scientist
The chemical tie! and the only female delegate!
