DISCLAIMERS • SIZE OF ESTONIA • ROLE OF PUBLIC RECOGNITION IN GENERAL • MY EXPERIENCE IS BASED MORE ON BUSINESS SCHOOLS THAN OTHERS. • Recognition in broader sense
Recognition has many purposes CONSUMER PROTECTION COMPETITION
STUDENT PROTECTION SOME 37 HIGHER SCHOOLS IN ESTONIA. ALL ACCREDITED. ASK EMPLOYERS HO MANY THEY RECKOGNIZE
STUDENT PROTECTION • Interesting curriculum 74% • Located in Tallinn 74% • Future prospects 46% • Reputation of school 41% • Level of teaching 30% • 76% of students have no idea about differences between curricula
Employer PROTECTION? 70% say (among “recognized” universities) all diplomas are equal. 16% say there may be differences according to specifics or profession 14% say diploma plays a role.
Employer PROTECTION? Still.... Any international experience creates advantage. University brand matters actually more than any recognition
COMPETITION TOOL COMPETITION DOES GOOD THINGS ( AND WE CAN`T ESCAPE IT ANYWAY) RECOGNITION AS A TOOL OF SELF-CONTROL CAN BE A VERY USEFUL THING RECOGNITION AS A TOOL OF SELF-PROTECTION CAN BE A DEVASTATING THING
EMPLOYER ..... • Wants people who are innovative, creative and thinking • Thinks she knows well enough about schools • Is ready to turn back to any formal recognitions • Doesn`t really care much • Expects a University behave the same as she does – give me value • Expects learning to be a two-way street.
