  2. What are the Events of Instruction? • Cognitive behavioral theory • Provides conditions for learning • Learning is shaped by optimal instruction • Instruction must be based on conditions • Sequence of events needed for all lessons • There are nine steps

  3. Step 1: Gain Attention Description: Use stimulus to gain student’s attention Tactics: • Pose questions to a learner • Have the learner pose a question

  4. Step 2: Inform Learner of Objective Description: make learner aware of expectations Tactics: • Explain the purpose of content • Have student created goals

  5. Step 3: Stimulate Recall of Prior Learning Description: students are using prior knowledge to enhance lesson content Tactics: • Use KWL • Create a web of knowledge

  6. Step 4: Present the Content Description: chunk and organize content toward learner needs Tactic: • Use different media • Present vocabulary and examples

  7. Step 5: Provide “Learning Guidance” Description: taking knowledge and guiding it into long term memory Tactics: • Mnemonics • Use comparing and contrasting examples

  8. Step 6: Elicit Performance or Practice Description: allow students to practice for internalization of skills and knowledge Tactics: • Elaborate on topic • Use manipulatives to expand

  9. Step 7: Provide Feedback Description: Informal assessment of comprehension Tactics: • Every pupil response • Peer sharing

  10. Step 8: Assess Performance Description: Formal independent assessment of instruction Tactics: • Post test • Final project

  11. Step 9: Enhance Retention and Transfer to the Job Description: independent continuation of skills Tactics: • Repetition • Self Reflection
