The Renal System (also called the Urinary System)is an organ system used for passage, storage and voiding of urine.
Kidneys • Bean-shaped organs about the size of your fist. • Located a hand up from the top of your hips, near the middle of your back. • Filter about 1700 quarts of blood a day (in a normal adult) and form urine for excretion.
Ureters • Tubes about 6-7 inches long that transport urine from the renal pelvis to the bladder.
Bladder • Hollow, muscular organ that stores urine until it is ready to be excreted from the body.
Urethra • A tube of smooth muscle with a mucous lining through which urine is excreted.
