Search & Destroy (1964-1968) • 1964: General Westmoreland takes command in Vietnam. Not impressed by S. Vietnamese Army (ARVN) asks for more US troops • LBJ, Secy of State Rusk, and Secy of Defense McNamara agree, 180K US combat troops land in Da Nang, SV in March 1965 • Westmoreland strategy is to defeat VC’s morale (incl. body count) • US launches “search & destroy” missions to root out VC but promises to win the “hearts & minds of Vietnamese villagers
