Team Building Objectives: • FWBAT identify personal preferences in the context of group work. • FWBAT understand the individual preferences of team members and how preferences affect how we relate to others in a group context.
Do Now Respond to this prompt on a sticky note… What was the best experience you had this summer? If you could wake up anywhere tomorrow morning, spend the day there, then return back to your life here the next day, where would it be? You have 3 minutes to respond. Place your sticky note anonymously at the front table when you are done.
Team Building – Key Points • When we come together to work as part of groups we all bring a constellation of personal and professional experiences that impact they ways in which we participate as group members and interact with teammates. • By increasing our own understanding of how we operate as individuals within groups and by increasing our understanding of the tendencies of our teammates we will better understand how to work collaboratively and effectively while being attune to preferences of others.
Compass Activity Directions • Share out brief descriptions of the directions: North - Acting – “Let’s do it;” likes to act, try things, plunge in. South – Caring – likes to know that everyone’s feelings have been taken into consideration, and that their voices have been heard before acting. • West – Paying attention to detail – likes to know the who, what, when, where, and why before acting • East – Speculating – likes to look at the big picture and the possibilities before acting.
Compass Activity Directions • 5 minutes – silently read the descriptions of each direction on page 2 • 10 minutes - answer the questions on page 3 • When prompted, move to the direction in the room that represents your dominant work style. • 10 minutes - work in your group to answer 3 questions… • Note the distribution among the “directions.” What might it mean? • What is the best combination for a group to have? Does it matter? • How can you avoid being driven crazy by another “direction?”
